As you may already know, cleaning your smile when you have braces can prove to be difficult. Unfortunately, this can create many problems, especially because it gives plaque the chance to gather and stick to the nooks and crannies of your teeth and braces. This can promote tooth decay, gum disease, and white-spotted teeth. It’s best to prevent this from happening as much as possible. To do so, our orthodontist, Dr. Laura Rothe, has some tips for you.

First, brush multiples times a day. It’s best to brush after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and right before bed. As you scrub, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Second, floss your teeth at least once a day. Floss more often if you can. Flossing can remove the plaque from between your teeth and around your braces. To make flossing easier, try using products like Superfloss that have stiff ends.

Third, rinse your mouth with mouthwash. This can clean your mouth, kill bacteria, and even freshen your breath. For best results, you can rinse up to four times a day.
