The holidays are coming up, and with them come parties, friends, and food. But as an adult with braces, holiday food can be hard. There are a lot of things you have eaten your whole life that you suddenly cannot have during this holiday time. You may need to skip that bowl of mixed nuts during cocktail hour, but remember that your oral health comes first!
This can be discouraging. But don’t fret! There are still a lot of foods you can eat. And as an adult, you have more control over the foods you choose to eat. Integrate these delicious holiday foods into your meals and parties, and you’ll be feeling festive in no time!
Chocolate: While you should avoid chocolate’s close friend, caramel, you don’t need to worry about chocolate itself. Dark chocolate is best for mouth health, but even chocolate with more sugar can be a nice treat every once in awhile.
Fruit: Though caramel apples may be a tradition, the risk the caramel poses to your braces isn’t worth it. Thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar can be a fun, crisp snack at a holiday party. Make sure to get thin slices so you don’t damage your braces! Try different varieties, such as Honeycrisp (probably don’t need the extra sugar on those), Braeburn, or Granny Smith.
Cake or brownies: Always a hit with guests, a beautifully decorated cake can be a gorgeous centerpiece at a holiday party. Just be sure to avoid nuts and sticky dried fruit! Try a pumpkin spice cake, a lemon cake, or a golden butter cake. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss extra carefully on the days you eat sugar!
