When you think about the 80s, what comes to mind? Big hair? Incredible music? Groundbreaking movies like The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,orBetter Off Dead?
If that’s what you recall from the 80s, you’re like nearly everyone else who loves and appreciates what that decade did for our culture, even though we’re nearly 40 years past that time.
However, one thing that happened in the 80s is noteworthy in the dental world – the introduction of ceramic braces.
What are they?
Ceramic braces are simply braces made entirely from translucent material. So instead of having the traditional metal brackets on your teeth, ceramic braces blend to match the color of your teeth. This is particularly helpful for adults who work in a professional setting and need more advanced orthodontic care than Invisalign®, but don’t want to have ostentatious brackets on their teeth.
How well do they work?
Ceramic braces will perform just as well as traditional braces; however, since they’re made from ceramic instead of metal, they’re more fragile and prone to breakage.
In addition, the clear bands used to secure the wires to the brackets may become discolored between office visits. Those two differences aside, ceramic and metal braces are virtually identical in function.
