After many months, your orthodontist has finally given you the news for which you have waited for so long…it is time to take your braces off! Congratulations! You have waited a long time for this day! What can you expect when it is time to remove your hardware?

First, it won’t take very long. Braces are removed in a single office visit and the procedure takes less than an hour. The process is painless, although you may feel some pressure. After your orthodontist has removed your braces, she will clean the remaining dental cement from your teeth.

Once your braces are off, you may surprised that you have white spots on your teeth. Don’t be- plaque has been building up around the brackets, so the white spots are perfectly normal. It is a good idea to visit your regular dentist for a cleaning and exam. While you are there, you can discuss whitening treatments for the spots on your teeth.

As part of your treatment, the orthodontist will give you a retainer. The job of the retainer is to keep your teeth in place while they settle into their new positions. Since everyone’s mouth is different, the length of time each person must wear their retainer differs. However, it is vitally important that you follow the doctor’s instructions for wearing it.

You should continue to keep your appointments with your orthodontist, and see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. Of course you should brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss before bed.

If you are thinking about straightening your smile, our orthodontist, Dr. Laura Rothe would love to see you for an exam and consultation. If you live in the Elkhorn, Nebraska, area, call 402.289.3232 to make an appointment at Skyline Orthodontics.
